Make your own Joy Essential Oil Blend - DIY Recipe and Uses

Wow, the past month (April/May 2015) for me has been super overwhelming, with kids being sick and my dad being out of town and having open heart surgery, birthday parties, traveling, vacations, and stress at work....... wholly moley, I am just exhausted physically and emotionally and have been feeling so down in the dumps. I've heard of the Joy Essential Oil blend and thought I should mix some up and give it a try to get myself in better spirits.

** My blogging on essential oils took a back seat since my youngest daughter got very sick just after her 1 year birthday back in May. She was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis which is an autoimmune disease triggered by the vaccines she received. It caused her immune system to attack her spinal cord causing paralysis of her limbs and torso.  For more information on my daughter's illness you can visit her page at www.GoFundMe.com/MaggieDawn

I had this saved as a draft just needing some final edits in my files since about April, 2015. The good news is that she is recovering and I am slowly getting back into things I used to do. It's been a long six months but I will say that I had my oils with me even during our 2 week hospital stay and at home to help us get through our tough times.

Our 'go to' oils have been; Peace and Calming, Lavander, Jojoba Oil, Frankinscense, and Theives. I haven't been able to mix up the Joy blend but I will be ordering up the few that I need and enjoying Joy as it has been much needed and I'm sure it would have been handy to have.

Joy Essential Oil Blend promotes the emotions of love, happiness and confidence. It helps us release emotional blocks of love, self-love and sharing love. It also helps us release grief and sorrow that is stored in the heart and lungs according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

It is a blend of ten different oils.

  • Ylang Ylang -has a long history in skin and hair care products, particularly in Asia, where it is used to promote luxuriant hair. It also restores confidence and equilibrium.
  • Bergamot- includes soothing digestion and combating stress. The essential oil has a calming aroma which relaxes the mind and body.
  • Geranium - helps you relax and beatify your skin! Used traditionally to support the circulatory and nervous systems, a great deal of its strength lies in its ability to revitalize body tissues.
  • Rosewood - is soothing to the skin it is emotionally stabilizing and is used for relaxation.
  • Lemon -consists of 68 percent d-limonene, a powerful antioxidant; and may be beneficial for the skin. It has cleansing and purifying properties.
  • Jasmine - as a wonderful aroma that relieves stress and uplifts the mind and body! It is also beneficial for the skin and supportive of women's challenges. It has been used throughout history for romance and attraction and for balancing the feminine energy of the body.
  • Roman Chamomile - creates inner peace. It is a calming oil that resonates well with adults, children and animals! Soothing to all types of skin, it is used extensively in Europe in skin preparations. Roman chamomile is also beneficial when added to massage oil for relief of muscle discomfort after exercise.
  • Rose Otto - has an intoxicating aroma that relieves stress. It is also known to help occasional discomfort associated with women's menstrual cycle; and is excellent for all skin types.
  • Mandarin (or Tangerine) - is uplifting to the mind and body and brings happiness and peace. It reduces stress and irritability.
  • Palmarosa - also been known as Turkish Geranium or Indian Geranium Oil. Supports the digestive system and is stimulating and soothing to the body and mind.
In the revised formulation from Young Living, Rosewood has been replaced with:

Roman Chamomile and German Chamomile; 2 different oils and benefits

Upon researching Chamomile Essential Oils I realized the benefits of German and Roman Chamomile Essential Oils are completely different. You may have not know that either! I have provided the differences, uses, and benefits of each oil below for reference.

Patchouli and Sweet Orange Essential Oils

The good thing about mixing your own essential oil blends is you get the benefit of having each individual essential oil to experiment with and make your own scents and recipes. I recently received my latest Aura Cacia essential oil order and made the Peace & Calming oil blend for my kiddos. I don't know if it has been the oil blend working or my oldest (4) has gotten over her 2 week "rotten" streak. Either way I'm a happy mama! I've been diffusing the Peace & Calming oil blend when it gets close to bed time to wind the kiddos down and she loves having oils on her toes so I've been putting some on her toes right before bed time.

I also made the Purification Oil Blend. It smells very much like a citronella candle and I used it outdoors in the evening to repel the mosquitoes, I think a few managed to nibble me before I remembered to spray some on but for the most part I didn't get eaten alive. I also diffused it in my infant daughters room and put a few drops on a cotton ball and put in the diaper pail. It seems to have worked for the most part! I'll have use it a little more to get the full effect of removing odors.

******* Update on Purification Oil Blend *******
I mixed the Purification Oil blend in a small glass spray bottle and sprayed it directly into the diaper pail and it worked a lot better then just putting a few drops on a cotton ball. No more lingering diaper smell in the nursery!

Included in my recent oil order was Patchouli and Sweet Orange essential oils. It was the weekend and instead of burning scented candles I now mix new fragrances of essential oils and diffuse to refresh the house. I think I found my new favorite mixture, I was in l.o.v.e. with it all weekend! In my large diffuser I combined about 8 drops of Patchouli and 6 drops of Sweet Orange. Wow, I can't even explain the pleasant fragrance it has. It smells of orange citrus with a floral background, yet the orange it not overpowering and it didn't smell like the 60's! You will just have to try it out and smell for yourself!

It also has a heavy base note making it longer lasting than many essential oils and is widely used in perfumes.

Peace and Calming Essential Oil DIY Recipe - Great for Calming Children, Anxiety, Teeth Grinding

Being the mother of a 4 year old and almost 1 year old and working full time can be crazy sometimes. Everyone warns you of the terrible 2's or the terrible 3's. Those days weren't as bad for us. I think it's finally hit for us as the terrible 4's. Being a 4 year old is tough. Trying to become more independent and establishing her role in the family as the oldest and now a big sister and I think there's a little jealousy setting in. All this has been hard on my daughter. She is a very strong willed and an independent little girl which is great. I admire that about her so much and am very proud of her. But lately the defiance and talking back and tantrums has really frazzled me.

I've talked with a few of my girlfriends for advice, I even went to the library to read up on dealing with her current behavior. Then I thought...... let's try some oils and Peace & Calming came to mind! We're going to give this a try and see if it helps to tame her tantrums and defiance. She also grinds her teeth at night so we can kill 2 birds with 1 stone!

Peace & Calming is a blend of Orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Tangerine and Blue Tansy essential oils. It has such a unique smell that sets it apart and when diffused, it will bring peace to whatever room it was diffused in.

Whether it's applied directly to the body or diffused into the air, Peace & Calming Essential Oil is expressly designed to calm tension of all kinds. It brings peace and harmony to all those who enjoy it.

Uses for Peace & Calming
Ease Tension and Anxiety
Halt Teeth Grinding
Promotes Deep Sleep
Calm fussy and/or rowdy children

1. Have a relaxing Bath

Mix 4-6 drops of Peace & Calming Essential Oil blend with 1/2 cup epsom salts, then place directly into a warm bath for relaxing experience.

2. Halt Teeth Grinding

Diffusing Peace & Calming Essential Oil blend while you sleep calms your body and can halt teeth grinding.

3. Improve General Sleep

In addition to stopping teeth grinding, Peace & Calming Essential Oil blend can also help anyone for better quality sleep. Instead of diffusing the oil, rub 1-2 drops on your shoulders and on the bottoms of your feet to encourage good sleep.

4. Calm Children

Diffuse Peace & Calming in the air in an area of high traffic or wherever you spend the most time. Diffuse when the kids get home from school or after a rowdy day playing with friends. You can also apply a few drops mixed with a carrier oil and apply to the child's forearms or bottoms of feet.

5. Enjoy a Calming Massage

Peace & Calming Essential Oil blend, mixed with a carrier oil, allows your muscles to relax easily and helps the massage itself be more effective.

****DIY Peace & Calming Essential Oil Blend****
30 Drops Tangerine
30 Drops Orange
20 Drops Ylang Ylang
10 Drops Patchouli
4 drops Blue Tansy

*My oil company does not carry Blue Tansy so I've replaced it with German Chamomile

Tangerine - Contains ester and aldehydes that are calming. Rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene it also helps to release stress and occasional nervous irritability.

Orange - Is rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene and aids in maintaining normal cellular regeneration. Also has calming effects and may be used for feelings of peace.

Ylang Ylang - Has a long history in skin and hair care products, particularly in Asia, where is is used to promote luxuriant hair. It also restores confidence and equilibrium.

Patchouli - Has a sweet and rich aroma that is very beneficial for the skin. Use to reduce wrinkled or chapped appearance. Patchouli is a general tonic that supports the digestive system and soothes occasional queasiness.

Blue Tansy - Has a slightly sweet and herbaceous aroma. Tansy plants have several species and this one is also called Moroccan Chamomile or Annual Tansy. Emotionally, it combats anger and negative emotions.

*German Chamomile - Has a sweet and grassy aroma. It is very calming and relaxing. It is known to dispel the emotions of anger and rage and promote peace and patience.

Essential Oils A-Z Reference Guide and Chart 100+ Uses "There's An Oil For That!"

When I began using essential oils I had no idea what kind of essential oil to use for what ailment. I came across a great reference chart that I bookmarked, printed and I'm about ready to print a new version and have it laminated! I refer to it so much I've about worn it out!

Having a reference guide you can pull out and refer to is a great way to get acquainted with using essential oils and also to see the MANY uses essential oils can help with.......... and it's great to have a reference when you need it in a crunch! So go ahead and print out the chart below and put it near your medicine cabinet or "bookmark" or "favorite" this page so you can always refer back to it.

I've recreated the chart I refer to along with adding to it. Like I've mentioned in previous posts, I am not a stickler on which essential oil company to use so this guide refers to essential oils from Doterra and Young Living. Feel free to use what ever brand of essential oils you are comfortable with. Just be sure that they are 100% Pure Essential Oils. If you would like more information on choosing an essential oil company see my blog on "Which Oil Company is Best?"

This is pretty much the HOLY GRAIL of a Reference Guide with over 100 different uses for Essential Oils! See below for an A-Z Essential Oil Reference Guide.

*Remember to always consult with your physician before using any essential oils as some essential oils interact adversely with prescription medications.

Note on Similar Blends (from different oil companies)
OnGuard = Thieves
Purify = Purification
Deep Blue = PanAway = Pain Away
DiGize = DigestZen
